JOB SUMMARY

Perform functions associated with managing the Point Loma Nazarene University Athletic Department's media relations and game operations activities; provides positive promotion of PLNU athletics through every available communication outlet; responsible for the production of official publications.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Primary informational contact with PLNU constituencies for all athletic teams
  • Responsible for publicity, information, game management and promotion
  • Manage and oversee all competition aspects NCAA contests including but not limited to statistics, game clock, in-game activation of promotions and other departmental requests, and all other contest related game staff. This includes attendance at all NCAA sanctioned athletic contests at PLNU
  • Disseminates publicity and information about the PLNU athletics department, its Student-Athletes and staff
  • Writes and edits game summaries and human interest articles
  • Maintains the Athletic Department website as well as social media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.)
  • Coordinator of Athletic Department publications
  • Recruit, trains, leads and supervises a student cadre that supports each area of the above responsibilities
  • Supervises statistical gathering, reporting, maintenance and record keeping procedures
  • Athletic Department photographer
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with all PacWest Conference and NCAA rules and regulations as they relate to all job related activities
  • Co-supervises with the Senior Associate Athletic Director the Graduate Assistants for Athletics Marketing & Communications
  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or outlined in the job description

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 3+ years of work experience in intercollegiate athletics public relations and/or communications
  • Working knowledge of concepts and principles of news, media communications and media relations.
  • Proven successful track record of writing and developing promotional materials and activities for intercollegiate athletics through the writing of press releases, features and biographies, and understanding of the language and nuances of sports as they apply to writing.
  • Knowledge and ability to run a professional and ethical press conference
  • General knowledge and skill in utilizing electronic communication tools
  • Proficient knowledge of graphic design, editing and layout of publications.
  • Working knowledge of a variety of computer software (Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop and various sport-specific statistics programs preferred).
  • Experience maintaining/updating website content and a general understanding of website content management tools (SIDEARM Sports content management and/or HTML experience preferred)
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to appropriately exercise independent judgment, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility and patience, and to successfully interact with diverse public, academic, staff and student populations on the telephone, via email and in person.
  • Strong organizational skills. Ability to work independently, or with others, under pressure, to meet deadlines and to make editorial decisions.
  • Professional knowledge regarding the compilation, evaluation and distribution of sports results, statistics, etc. Thorough knowledge of sports statistics (utilizing programs such as Stat Crew and Genius Sports) for a wide variety of sports, and proven ability to compile and compute statistical data in a timely manner.
  • Experience in overseeing sports information and game management personnel. Professional knowledge of how to communicate with officials, and manage scorers and/or press table at home athletic events.
  • Knowledge of intercollegiate sports and their specific playing rules, NCAA regulations and statistics. Working knowledge of the structure of athletic associations and their rules and regulations, especially the National College Athletic Association
  • Proven working knowledge of various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram) and how they are used to engage constituents.
  • Professional knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of an NCAA divisional athletic program.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Work schedule will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to travel to out-of-town meetings and athletic competitions.
  • Valid Driver's License required.

 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The work is primarily sedentary and may require sitting for extended periods of time. Use of computer equipment: computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Vision to read documents, email and other correspondence, and reports on paper and computer monitor. Hearing and speaking to communicate effectively with others in person and by phone. Will also stand, stoop, push, pull, and lift up to 10 lbs throughout the day.
